20 YEARS OF KEIGWIN

It was 20 years ago…

…that Nicole Wolcott, my partner in crime, and I dragged my mattress off of my bed, strapped it onto a taxi, and with the dollar of a Broadway paycheck and the support of people like you, we put on a show.

We titled the show KEIGWIN + COMPANY, and it showcased five new dances with five great friends.

Two decades in,

KEIGWIN + COMPANY has created a few more dances (46 and counting) and performed those works around the world, from NYC to Akron to Santa Barbara to Tunisia — in theaters, in parks, in pools, on soccer fields, and from our living rooms — brought to life by our extraordinary family of dancers.

We have shared the stage with downtown’s best burlesque acts (remember the days of Keigwin Kabaret?) and ballet’s brightest stars.

And, we've danced alongside YOU from coast to coast, celebrating your communities and showcasing your talents.

It has been a joyful ride to create dances, to watch people dance, and to encourage everyone to explore their own physicality and creativity and we look forward to the next 20 years!

20 Year Highlights

  • 2003: First Performance at Joyce Soho, Mattress Suite

    KEIGWIN + COMPANY makes our official debut at Joyce Soho. “And the audience screams, hoping this is the start of something big: an exciting new dance voice.” Gus Solomons jr., Gay City News, April 2003

  • 2007: First Bolero NYC

    In 2007, we dreamed of creating a work that celebrated the diversity and density of NYC, showcasing New Yorkers – dancers and non-dancers alike from age 2 to 82. Bolero NYC provided the launch of our broader Bolero project, now with 16 singular versions created across the country with more than 700 cast members featured. “It is funny, touching and a masterly piece of choreographic organization.   • 2012: Sold Out Run at The Kennedy Center’s Eisenhower Theater

    Performance of audience favorites, Mattress Suite and Love Songs, alongside the fashion-inspired Runaway called “a thrilling coup d' theater” by Vanity Fair, and the hyper-kinetic Megalopolis, set to Steve Reich’s Sextet for Six Marimbas and M.I.A.’s World Town and XR2.

  • 2017: DanceMotion USA to Africa

    K+C brought our electrifying, joyful brand of contemporary dance to Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, and Tunisia through DanceMotion USA, a cultural exchange program of the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs administered by BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music). K+C performed, offered choreographic workshops, and collaborated with artists and young people of all ages and abilities and returned home reinvigorated and inspired.

  • 2020: Creation & Premiere Bolero Juilliard amid Global Pandemic

    As the world turned upside down, Larry and Nicole dove into the burgeoning world of digital dance in partnership with the full community of artists from The Juilliard School -- bringing together dancers, musicians, singers, actors, faculty, and alumni. Spearheaded by dear friend and President of The Juilliard School, Damian Woetzel, and based on K+C’s community work Bolero, Bolero Juilliard showcases the talents and creativity of the country’s best young artists across discipline in a portrait of art-making and shared humanity amid physical isolation and uncertainty. Named “One of the 9 Best Ballets to Come Out of Quarantine” by Vogue.
